Tuesday evening Miss Ruth Harrison entertained in honor of
Miss Jennie Mae Pegues, a bride of the month. The front door mysteriously
opened at the least sound of the approaching guest by a witch of unusual type,
who bid the guest enter.
A sister witch snatched from the guests their wraps. When
all had arrived, the first witch gave to each a card directing each one to a
different place, from the attic to the cellar. After six or eight trips to
different places, the guest found a lunch box with “take me to the dining room”
on it. This room was most attractively decorated in Halloween spooks and
pumpkins, corresponding with the other decorations throughout the house. In the
lunch boxes was chicken salad sandwiches, deviled eggs, cake and pickles;
delicious hot coffee and hot rolls were handed out by the witches, who were
none other than Mrs. June Diggs and Mrs. W.E. Harrison. At each guest’s place
at the table was ambrosia in orange cases cut with witches faces on them. On
the place cards were a demand from the witches to look in a certain place and
find a package with a card “Carry me to the sitting room and hem me for the
bride.” Guests assembled in the sitting room and hemmed 12 towels for the
bride. The hostess presented the honoree with a pair of handsomely embroidered
pillow slips. After the presentations were made, fortunes were told.
Then Messrs. Don Phillips, John Scales and Bill Ormond
joined the party and more games were enjoyed, such as bob apple,
ring-on-the-string, ghosts, etc.
Home made candies, salted nuts, apples and Brazil nuts were
served.
Those enjoying Miss Harrison’s hospitality were Misses
Jennie Mae Pegues, Susanne Pegues, Ophelia Ormond, Elizabeth Cole, Octavia
Scales, and guest, Mrs. Harvey Haywood of Asheville, Elsie and Janet Fairley,
Laura Page Steele, Mrs. June Diggs, Messrs. Don Phillips, John Scales and Bill
Ormond.
