Kitchen Flue Fire Destroys Robert Rhyne Home, 1919

The Eagle, Cherryville, N.C., August 7, 1919

Dwelling Consumed by Fire

The residence of Mr. Robert Rhyne near Waco was destroyed by fire last Saturday evening. Mr. Rhyne was at his store at Waco at the time the dwelling caught and his family at home did not discover the fire until it had made considerable headway as they were in the far end of the house from where the fire originated in the kitchen. It is supposed the fire started from the kitchen flue.

Only a very few articles were saved. By the time help arrived the heat was so intense that all anyone could do was to stand and look at the burning structure. A $1,000 piano was dragged as far as the door but had to be abandoned on account of the intense heat and left for the flames to consume.

Mr. Rhyne we understand only carried $1,500 insurance on the building having let a $1,000 policy lapse only a short time ago. The loss is estimated at about $6,000.

The congregation at the Lutheran Church here Sunday made up a purse of about $400 for Mr. Rhyne.
