Lt. James J. Sykes, Aviator, Killed on Reconnaissance Mission, 1918


2nd Lieutenant James J. Sykes, of Salisbury, N.C., an aviator in the First Corps, Aero Squadron, U.S. Army Air Service, was killed August 1, 1918 during a photographic reconnaissance mission. His plane was shot down behind enemy lines, Soissons, France. His name is inscribed on the N.C. State Belltower, one of the N.C. State students and alumni killed in World War I.
