World's Better Place Due to These Men's Sacrifice, Dec. 21, 1918

From the editorial page of the Hickory Daily Record, Dec. 21, 1918

Thirty-four University of North Carolina men have made the supreme sacrifice. Among the number was Capt. Horace B. Cowell, class of 1915, who is known throughout the south for his prowess on the football field. He was killed two days before the armistice was signed. Another victim was Joseph Henry Johnson who had won the degree of bachelor and master of arts at the university and doctor of philosophy at the University of Illinois. There were in every state hundreds of young men as well equipped as these who have laid down their lives to make the world better.
