Colored Graded School Building Overflowing, Feb. 6, 1919

From The Roanoke News, Weldon, N.C., Feb. 6, 1919

A Larger School Building Wanted by the Colored People

A large mass meeting of colored citizens met at the Colored Graded School building Monday night to consider a plan for erecting a larger building for the accommodation of their school children. Several speeches were made and it was decided to appeal to the Board of Education of Weldon for aid. It was stated that there were more than 250 pupils enrolled, and there were just as many on the outside who could not get in on account of the congested condition of the school rooms. The meeting resolved itself into a “Citizen’s Educational Improvement League,” and organized by electing Dr. J.A. Tinsley president, R.A. Cheek secretary, and J.H. Browning treasurer. The purpose of this organization is to solicit subscriptions to build larger accommodations for the children and also to get in touch with their white friends to help carry out this project. Harmony and good feeling prevailed and before adjournment a committee was appointed.
