Large Fire in Matthews Destroys Businesses, Some Homes, Feb. 18, 1919

From The Monroe Journal, Feb. 18, 1919

An estimated total loss of $50,000 was sustained by fire of unknown origin at Matthews, in Mecklenburg county, 13 miles north of here, early Sunday morning. It is reported that no insurance was carried on the buildings damaged or destroyed except the bank building. Buildings destroyed or damaged were A.J. Williams Hotel and Williams Furniture Store, total loss; Wadsworth’s Sales Stables, total loss, stock saved; Bank of Matthews, building damaged, papers saved; Hood’s grocery store, total loss; Sinclair’s shoe shop, total loss, fire originated here; two store frame residence, total loss; Mr. H.M. Heath, whose home was recently destroyed by fire, was occupying rooms over the sales stables, sustained a loss of all his household effects. Checks which he had recently received for the insurance on his house were also consumed by the fire. However, it is understood that these can be duplicated. Monroe citizens who passed through Matthews Sunday afternoon characterize the fire as one of the worst they had ever seen.
