Caldwell County Boy Decorated for Bravery

Lieutenant Andrew L. Nelson of Lenoir has been awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French army for “exceptional bravery and heroism displayed in action near Bussy farm, Champagne Sector, Sept. 29, 1918. With disregard of personal danger Lieut. Nelson showed great devotion to duty by collecting scattered units of his company in the face of direct artillery and machine gun fire.
