Big Sunday Dinner Welcomes Walter Bumgarner Home, May 1919

From the Hickory Daily Record, May 6, 1919

Big Sunday Dinner for Verdun Soldier

Mr. Walter Bumgarner, a veteran of the regular army who saw a year’s service in France, was the recipient of a big dinner Sunday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Bumgarner, five miles east of Hickory. A hundred or more friends gathered at the home and the dinner was served under the big trees in the yard. It was an occasion both enjoyable and profitable. Rev. J.E. Barb of Hickory was among the friends present.

The young soldier is a veteran of the Verdun and Meuse campaigns and he was in some of the toughest fighting of the war. He will leave in a few days for California.
