W.W. Pace Given 2 Years in Penitentiary for Barn Burning, Williams, Peace Divorces Issued, Many Cases Continued, May 23, 1919

W.W. Pace Is Given Two Years In Penitentiary for Barn Burning. . . Large Number of Cases Continued. . . Report of Solicitor. . . Two Divorces Granted

Franklin Superior Court presided over by His Honor Judge O.H. Allen came to a close on Saturday afternoon after disposing of quite a number of cases. A large number of cases were continued from one cause or another and leaves quite a full docket. This condition is caused mainly from the fact that no court was held from May 1918 to February 1919. The cases disposed of since our last report follow:

State vs Davie Bowden, false pretense, defendant entered plea of nolo contendere, judgement suspended upon payment of costs.

State vs Sula Mitchiner, infanticide, nol pros with leave.

State vs James Denton and Tinker Perry, a d w, c c w, not guilty as to James Denton, guilty as to Tinker Perry.

State vs W.W. Pace, barn burning, guilty, two years in the penitentiary.

Mamie Williams vs James A. Williams, divorce granted.

State vs Paul Jones, disposing of mortgaged property, capias and continued.

State vs Israel Alston, forcible trespass, cutting timber unlawfully, continued.

State vs Sidney Davis, unlawful possession of whiskey, called and failed.

State vs Bufus Weaver, selling cider-wine, called and failed.

State vs Beb King, attempt to bribe, called and failed.

State vs Lewis King, l and r, called and failed.

State vs. J.T. Wilder, a d w, continued.

State vs Weldon Medlin, seduction, called and failed.

State vs Boyd Frazier and Beulah Walters, elopement, called and failed.

State vs James Robbins, abduction, called and failed.

State vs Charles C. Ayescue, murder, continued.

State vs Jim Spivey, removing crops, called and failed.

State vs John Mangum, l and r, continued.

State vs Henly Green, disposing of mortgaged property, continued.

State vs Ed Chaney, c c w, continued under former order.

State vs Jack and Anna Dunston, manslaughter, capias and continued.

State vs E.L. Edgerton, c c w, continued.

State vs E.C. McRae and Jim Hamlett, resisting officer, called and failed.

State vs Guilford Perry, assault c c w, continued.

State vs Rufus Bobbitt, a d w, capias and continued.

State vs George Nichols, a d w, continued.

State vs Twitt Robbins, assault, continued.

State vs Charlie Sutton, l and r, called and failed.

State vs Isaac Brown, c c w, disturbing public worship, continued.

State vs Edward Perry, breaking into lock up at Franklinton, called and failed.

Beulah Peace vs Leo Peace, divorce granted.

State vs Haywood Walthrop, c c w, disturbing public worship, continued.

State vs G.S. Jacobs, manslaughter, continued.

State vs Roscoe Coppedge, assault on woman, continued.

State vs Rupert Medlin, assault with intent to commit rape, guilty of simple assault, 30 days in jail and pay costs. Appeal.

State vs Essex Ruffin, illicit distilling, a d w, continued.

State vs Charlie Medlin, illicit distilling, continued.

State vs Jeff and Luther Pearce, assault on woman, continued.

State vs Willie Dunston, a d w, continued.

State vs Percy Faulkner, l and r, submits to charge of forcible trespass, judgment suspended upon payment of costs.

State vs Matthew Williamson, a d w, c c w, continued.

State vs Zeb Collins, Johnnie Leonard and Spencer Parrish, a d w, Collins called and failed. Not guilty as to Leonard and Parrish.

State vs Frank Macon, assault, called and failed.

State vs Foster Perry, c c w, l and r, continued.

State vs Trim Alston, retailing, called and failed.

State vs John Mitchell, l and r, continued.

State vs Ulus Fogg, forcible trespass, continued.

State vs Ernest Mitchell, c c w, unlawful possession of whiskey, called and failed.

State vs Richard Massenburg, assault, called and failed.

State vs Lassie Perry, sentence changed so that Commissioners could use him at County home.

Solicitor’s Report

Solicitor H.E. Norris, presented the following report to the Court:

Superior Court, May Term, 1919

To The Hon. O.H. Allen, Judge Presiding:

The undersigned Solicitor of the Seventh Judicial District respectfully reports to the Court that he has examined at this term of said Court into the condition of the office of J.J. Barrow, the Clerk of the Superior Court of said County, that he finds said office well administered in all respects, that said Clerk keeps in his office all the books required by law, properly indexed for speedy and convenient reference.

He further reports to the court that he has not examined the accounts of the said Clerk either as Clerk or Receiver at this Term of Court, but expects to do so within the next 20 days and make report as to same.
