Andy Vernon Arrested for Aiding and Abetting Escape of Dave Clowman From Bridgewater Camp, June 17, 1919

From the Hickory Daily Record, June 17, 1919

Lured Boy From Bridgewater Camp

Andy Vernon, a 14-year-old white boy employed on construction work at Bridgewater, was arrested here yesterday afternoon by Chief Lentz and held for Mr. J.E. Hawkins, who carried him back to Bridgewater last evening to answer to the charge of aiding and abetting in the escape of Dave Clowman, another Charlotte youth, hired out by the Mecklenburg commissioners for three months for larceny.

Clowman was hired out to J.B. Hawkins along with some other lads from Mecklenburg, and Vernon was employed by him. It is charged that Vernon induced Clowman to leave, paying his railroad fare. The other boys would not be lured off and promptly gave the alarm. The contractor’s son came down yesterday afternoon and took the lads back to camp. Clowman will be tried for his offense.
