Ruth Current was inducted into the Jane S. McKimmon Family & Consumer Sciences Hall of Fame on May 25, 2011, at the FCS Centennial Celebration at N.C. State University.

Ruth Current was born in 1901 in Rowan County. Before joining Extension, she worked as a dietitian at the Methodist Orphanage in Winston-Salem and taught home economics in several high schools in North Carolina. She was a home demonstration agent in Iredell County, district home agent in the Southwest, and assistant State 4-H leader. On Feb. 4, 1937, she was named State Agent, succeeding Dr. Jane S. McKimmon.

Current initiated the homemakers’ study tour to the United Nations, coordinated programs with the State Library, the State Board of Health, the State Recreation Commission, and the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina.

She received many awards during her career, including being elected to the N.C. Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1976 (http://www.ncagr.gov/paffairs/aghall/current.htm). She was named “Woman of the Year” by Progressive Farmer magazine in 1947 and by Chi Omega Sorority in 1953. In 1950 she was chosen as “Carolina’s Farm Leader.” In 1954 she received the Superior Service Award from the United States Department of Agriculture. When she retired in 1961, the North Carolina Extension Homemakers Clubs established a loan fund in her honor, which was used to help county agents pursue graduate studies.
