Lowesville’s Sarah Nixon to be inducted into McKimmon Hall of Fame at NC State

A longtime newspaper reporter, homemaker, and community volunteer has been selected as a charter member of the Dr. Jane S. McKimmon Family and Consumer Services Hall of Fame at North Carolina State University.

Sarah Nixon of Lowesville will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony on May 25 in Raleigh.

The Hall of Fame was created to recognize people who have played critical roles in the development of the Family and Consumer Sciences programs and Extension and Community Associations in North Carolina.

Nixon joined a Home Demonstration Club (now Extension and Community Association) in Gaston County in April 1947, three months after she married Roy Nixon and moved across the county line into Lincoln.  This started a 61-year career of volunteer work to make communities all over the world better for women, children and families in cooperation with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

She helped organize the Mount Holly Extension and Community Association Club, which in 2008 was recipient of the Mount Holly Community Service Award at the annual Community Dinner. Sarah’s children, Cliff, Susan, Kathy and Murray were all active 4-Her’s.

Over the past 61 years, her volunteer service has included active participation statewide as the 1987 state president of the NC ECA and many years as editor of the TarHeel Homemaker, the statewide newspaper for NC ECA.

Nationally, she has served with the National Extension Homemakers Council, with Country Women’s Council, USA and internationally with the Associated Country Women of the World, headquartered in London.  As a life member of ACWW since 1977, she was a voting delegate to triennial conferences in Kenya, East Africa, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, The Hague, The Netherlands, and Tasmania, Australia.

For almost 50 years, Sarah has been spreading news about Mount Holly and its activities as a newspaper reporter, columnist, and news editor.  She was also a staff writer with The Lincoln Times-News, sharing news about East Lincoln with the community.

She served as president of the North Carolina Press Women in 1973-1974 and won numerous NCPW writing awards. After ending a 44-year career of covering all phases of life around Mount Holly and eastern Lincoln County, Sarah still writes a monthly column about local news and happenings.  In 2009, Sarah Nixon was chosen as the Grand Marshal for the Mount Holly Christmas Parade.
