Wiggs Wins Again at
Ham Show
A dozen eggs sold for $35 and a single ham brought $344.25
at Smithfield last month.
The eggs belonged to Mrs. Lena Barnes of Selma, Route 1, and
the ham to Leonard Wiggs of Kenly, Route 2. They won the grand champion awards
in Johnston County’s seventh annual Ham and Egg Show. Wiggs also exhibited the
top ham in last year’s show.
In the sale, a total of $65.50 was paid for the top 10 dozen
eggs, and $2,453.97 was paid for the 75 blue-ribbon hams.
The hog markets at Smithfield, Newton Grove, Mt. Olive, and
Dunn, operated by J.N. and Jacob C. Williams, bought Wiggs’ grand champion 13
½-pound ham. The price was $25.50 per pound.
G.A. Allen of Hudson-Belk paid $8.25 a pound for the reserve
champion ham, exhibited by David Richardson of Wendell, Route 1. The
third-ranking ham, cured by Joseph Ward of Selma, Route 3, went to V.J.
Underwood for $4 a pound.
Strickland Bros. Lumber Co. bought the grand champion eggs.
Smithfield FCX took the reserve champion entry, exhibited by Mrs. Mary Sanders
of Smithfield, Route 1, for $12.50. The third-ranking dozen, produced by Mrs.
Lena King of Zebulon, Route 1, went to H.V. Rose for $5.
The lowest price paid for a dozen eggs was $1.50, which also
was the lowest price per pound paid for any of the hams.
L.R. Johnson, Negro county agent, said he was well pleased
with the success of the show and sale, which will be repeated next year.
