"Worth Speaks About the Southside," May 1947

“Worth Speaks about the Southside” from the Saturday, May 10, 1947, issue of the Statesville Record Landmark

Southside once missed getting a church by the deaths of two very fine ministers of The Gospel, the last Rev. T.H. Williams and Rev. LD. Ballard, both of the Baptist faith.

Both of these fine men lived in practically the same block on Caldwell street.

The idea of a church for residents of this community was in the minds of others beside these preachers. Several had expressed their willingness to help, one big-hearted citizen of Statesville even offered a lot on which the building would be erected.

But—“The hand of time, having writ, passes on.”

GOOD SOUL—We once had a very loveable old soul in our neighborhood by the name Mrs. Maria Wyatt, widow of the late Wilson Wyatt, a Baptist minister. We called her “Mammy” Wyatt and she was one of the most interesting old ladies anyone could ever meet. She passed on several years ago.

RIDING BRITCHES BOY—Clyde Shook, Statesville’s modern version of the Lone Ranger.

GIVE THE GUY A BOOST—Coleman Dagenhart, the city’s newest “cop.
GOOD THOUGHT—I asked the man who stood at the gate of New Year:

“Show me a light that I may see my way into the Unknown,” and he replied:

“Place your hand into the Hand of God and that for you will be better than a light and safer than a known trail.”

Know where I got that fine prose? From a soldier and a Statesville soldier at that. You all know him. He’s Tom Frye of Front street.

SOUTHSIDE SNAPS—MITCHELL STINSON enjoying oyster fry….MRS. LUTHER FORBES looks as cute as ever….MR. AND MRS. E.R. STEWART watching traffic go by….”RED” VANSTORY zooming off on motorcycle….LEROY DRUM going fishing with brother EARL….BRYAN LEVAN looking at chickens (the eating kind)….MR. T.R. KERR SR. digging in garden.

SOUTHSIDE SILHOUETTE—Mrs. Clyde W. Albea on the Boulevard is of a friendly nature. She is a saleswoman and a member of the Little Brick church.

TWO LITTLE HEARTBREAKERS—Little Misses Barbara Joyce an Margaret Sylvia (Peggy) Steward, small daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Stewart of Monroe street are two of the most cunning little tykes that you’ve ever seen. Some of these other little tots had better look to their laurels a bit later on.
