Charlotte—The
expected has happened. With the announcement that the Winston-Salem club will
not finish its schedule, the North Carolina League closed its 1917 season. The
directors met at once to wind up the affairs of the league.
When Raleigh and
Asheville dropped out about two weeks ago, it was then thought that the other
four clubs would never finish the season. Lack of attendance on account of war
conditions was noticeable throughout the league, and for several days it has
been a question of just a few more games. The Twins and Hornets have been
losing money every day. So has Durham. Greensboro, with a winning club and the
heavy sale of season tickets, had enough cash to continue the season.
