Today's Children Are Overindulged, War Will Teach Them Thrift, 1918

March 9, 1918, from the editorial page of the Hickory Daily Record
Col. Geo. H. Rights, local editor of the Union Republican, tells the young folks that they may learn something by economy as a result of this war. The veteran philosopher of our old friend happened along about the time of the War Between the States, and he learned a few things about thrift. Children of today know nothing of self-denial or of not getting what they want. We are old enough to have known a boy who thought he was lucky when he had a red cent to spend on each birthday anniversary until he reached 10 years.
