Jack Roberts Has Died of Dropsy, 1930

“Jack Roberts Dead,” from The News-Record, Marshall, ‘The Established Newspaper of Madison County,’ Tuesday, July 1, 1930. A person with dropsy was retaining large amounts of water, possibly because of congestive heart failure.

Mr. Jack Roberts, age 58, died at his home on the George Fortner place Friday, June 27, about 2:30 p.m. The cause of his death was dropsy, from which he had suffered for about four weeks, part of which time he had undergone treatment at a hospital in Asheville. Funeral services were at the Fortner Cemetery Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J.A. Martin. Interment followed at the Fortner Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ervin Candler, Edward Candler, Sherman Candler, Allen Payne, Wilburn Payne, and Ernest Rector.

The deceased is survived by his mother, Mrs. Lettie Roberts of Big Pine. His wife, who has been making her home on Big Pine for about a year, was present at the funeral. He leaves three sisters: Mrs. O.R. Jarrett of Candler, N.C., Miss Tilda Roberts of Hot Springs, and Mrs. Lawson Marier of Big Pine. Three sons and three daughters survive as follows: Norman Roberts of Sandy Mush, Chester and Buddy Roberts, both of Marshall, Mrs. R.C. Davis, Clyde, N.C., Mrs. C.B. Haynie and Miss Mary Roberts of Marshall.

Mr. Roberts was a Baptist, a good citizen and neighbor. He set a fine example in sticking to one job and place, he having lived on the same farm for 38 years.
