Tell the Truth, Farabee Says to Candidates, 1918

“To Tell the Truth,” from the editorial page of the Hickory Daily Record, Sept. 3, 1918, H.H. Farabee, Editor
It is not important whether Democrats or Republicans hold the offices in Catawba county. Each party watches the other very closely and all misdeeds will find the light of day. With two parties running fairly close, there is not much opportunity for wrongdoing. But it is important that the people be told the straight truth, that no insidious falsehood be dinned into their ears and that no poisons be left in their minds to injure them, their children, and their state.
This is America’s war. It is being fought by the whole people and was brought to them despite the utmost endeavors of their constituted leaders to keep them out. That is the whole truth.
Any other statements are false. An ignorant man can be imposed upon, but his children will curse the fellows who mar their lives.
The truth is good enough and it should be told fearlessly by every candidate.
