Our friend Mr. L.F. Murray, in charge of the fire department quarters and driver of the big La France engine, is proud of the quarters that have been fixed up for the firemen in the municipal building. He has lately visited the fire departments in Salisbury, High Point, and Durham and pronounces these in Wilson the most comfortable and up-to-date of any he has seen.
For
the convenience and the comfort of the firemen, a reception and dance hall has
been provided with a Victrola that music may be afforded them and their guests.
In
addition to this on the side of the hall are the rooms of the firemen,
commodious quarters, that they may be convenient to their work. The hall and
rooms are over the fire house and an alarm brings them sliding down the pole to
the engine and the trucks pulled by the horses.
The
activity of Mr. Murray not only has caused comfortable quarters to be arranged
for the firemen but he has also introduced a number of changes that are helpful
to the electrical apparatus. The batteries and the installation are now in
compact shape and easily accessible and are kept in apple pie condition. He is
as proud of his engine and his fire apparatus as a baby would be with a new toy
and they are in the pink of condition.
The
fact that the engine is ready to go at the snap of the bell indicates that some
one is seeing to it that everything is kept ready.
