School May Be Closed Due to Flu, But Teachers Prepare Food for the Sick; Local Folk Donate for Flu Relief, 1918

Under the direction of Miss Margaret Jones, domestic science teacher, the teachers of the Hickory schools are putting in valuable time these days preparing food for those families which are unable to help themselves on account of the influenza. The teachers will work in shifts seven days a week until the situation is relieved.

The Record reporter in company with Mr. J.M. Stephens visited the high school this morning and saw the teachers preparing food. They were as enthusiastic in this work as in the work of the class room; here their training was serving humanity.

Miss Jones is being assisted by Misses Millie Kate McComb, Margaret McComb, Virginia Allen, Elizabeth Carrier, Lillian Field, Frances Field, Naomi Coblentz and Mary Dorrity.

Miss Jones and her staff have gone with Mrs. Elliott and Judge and Mrs. Cline to Brookford, West Hickory and Highland, where the situation is the most serious.
