Lt. Charles Augustine Speas Dies of Wounds Received in Action, 1918

From the Hickory Daily Record, Nov. 23, 1918. A. & E. College is now known as North Carolina State University, and Lt. Speas, Charles Augustine Speas, is on the Bell Tower on campus, the university's memorial to its students who have fallen in battle. 

Lieut. Speas Dies From Wounds in France

Dr. W.P. Speas has received a message stating that his brother, Lieut. C.A. Speas died in France on October 25 from wounds received in action.

Lieutenant Speas graduated as a civil engineer at A. & E. College, Raleigh, in 1911. Since that time he had followed his profession, holding responsible positions in Central America and various southern states. He was a mathematician of rare ability and as a civil engineer he was making food. When the United States went to war he packed his compass and tripod and enlisted as a private, serving in Co. B, 105^th engineers, which is a part of the 30^th division. Those who read the Daily Record will recall his recent description of the battle of the Hindenburg line, in which battle the 30^th division played so prominent a part.

Thus another young man has died in the cause of freedom.
