John C. Laney Is Killed in Action

Mr. and Mrs. John S. Laney of Rhodhiss have received official word of the death of their son, Private John C. Laney, Co. A, 119th infantry, who was killed in action on September 29. He had been in service since September, 1917.

Mr. Laney was 22 years of age. Just before the war he underwent an operation to remove a physical defect so that he could enter the service. He was a fine young man and had the proper spirit.
All those who knew the young man speak of his grit and worth, and there is genuine sorrow at his death. Is probably was in the big fight in which other North Carolina boys participated.
