Avery Who Was Killed in France
Jesse Avery was born in Harnett county near Duke, where he
resided until the outbreak on the Mexican border. He volunteered with Co. M 2nd
N.C. Infantry and went with the forces to the border. Later he was transferred
with his regiment to France where he bravely performed his duty. On several
occasions he was in action and in one of the engagements volunteers were called
for and he responded. While doing this work he was wounded and later died in a
hospital in France.
It is stated that he was the first boy from the county to
make the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. His sisters with other relatives
gathered at the hold home church near Duke with a large crowd of friends where
a suitable memorial was held in honor of the fallen hero who in his prime of
young manhood gave his life for his country. He gave his life for the best that
came his way and he that does this has lived a life that is not in vain. We
shall cherish his memory as one of our brave and true young men that gave the
best he had for his country and civilization.
