Dr. C.A. Munroe Dies
at Davidson
Dr. Colon A. Munroe, for a third of a century a prominent
figure in the Presbyterian church of North Carolina, one of its best preachers
and one of the most loveable men in the state, died yesterday morning at his
home at Davidson College after a short illness. The funeral will be held this afternoon
at 3 o’clock.
Thirty years ago Dr. Munroe was pastor of the Hickory and
Lenoir Presbyterian churches, resigning his charge here to give all his time to
Lenoir, and later giving up his work there in order to become chairman and
superintendent of the home mission committee of the Concord Presbytery, a
position he held until two years ago when he resigned on account of ill health.
For more than 16 years Dr. Munroe resided in Hickory and he loved Hickory
people as they loved him. A kindlier soul never radiated the spirit of the
Master; he was an apostle of sweetness and light.
Dr. Munroe was one of three brothers who entered the
ministry. He was educated at Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary
and was active in his church until declining health forced him to retire. Last
fall he moved to Davidson from Hickory, but he still retained his interest in
this city, and no man was happier than he at the wholesome progress of this
community.
Dr. Munroe was about 70 years of age and was a native of
Robeson county. He is survived by his wife and four daughters and one son. They
are Mrs. James Douglass of Davidson Mrs. Clark of the state of Washington, Mrs.
Hudson of Greenville, S.C., Dr. stokes Munroe of Columbus, Ga., and Miss Mary
Munroe of Davidson. He is also survived by three brothers—two ministers of the
gospel—Dr. John Munroe, a physician of Charlotte, Rev. Douglass Munroe of Red
Springs, and Rev. Marshall Munroe, D.D., of Texas.
Several Hickory people attended the funeral this afternoon,
among them being Mr. and Mrs. K.C. Menzies, Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Smith and others
and Dr. and Mrs. A.B. MacKethan of Fayetteville, guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Menzies.
