Sarah McLean, Mamie Mercer Win First Prize in Memorial Building Essay Contest, April 1, 1919

From The Daily Times, Wilson, N.C., April 1, 1919. First Prize Essays in Memorial Building Essay Contest. Only white children could compete in this contest.

Sarah McLean, Wilson High School, Grade 10, 1st Prize for Wilson City.

The gallant sons of our country were among the first to lay down their lives that democracy might live and that America might be free from autocracy.

Our gratitude should take some form that will show to the world the place our boys will always hold in the affection of the people. Hence the idea of a memorial community building for the citizens of Wilson and Wilson county was conceived as a fitting tribute to the greatest and most efficient soldiery the world has ever known.

Everybody should contribute to the erection of this building if they failed to they would be deprived of the greatest privilege of the greatest century.

We couldn’t fight but we can give, and we can give, so that the honor and glory of our youth shall be upheld and for ages to come the memorial community building of Wilson will stand as an everlasting monument.

Mamie Mercer, Tomlinson School, 8th Grade, Black Creek, 1st Prize, Wilson County

Never before in the history of the world has such a war been fought, and who does not rejoice that the end had come and the world made safe for democracy? We further rejoice that it was the full-blooded Americans from Wilson County that helped to this. To the men we owe a debt which we can never repay, but we can erect a memorial building in Wilson that will show our appreciation for what they have done and will be a living monument in honor of their heroic deeds.

Besides this memorial community building will be very beneficial to the citizens of Wilson county, therefore, every citizen should have a common interest in the building. A building fund must be raised and it is the duty of every citizen of Wilson county to contribute liberally to this cause. Our victorious heroes were not slackers and we must not dishonor ourselves by being a slacker in this great movement.
