Congregation Glad Rev. Koepplin Will Remain at Claremont, June 19, 1919

From the Hickory Daily Record, June 19, 1919

Rev. Mr. Koepplin to Remain at Claremont

In response to the unanimous request of the members of St. Marks and St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran churches, Rev. J.C. Koepplin of Claremont has refused a call extended to him by his old church at Sulphur Springs, Ohio, which he left 20 years ago for Detroit. Mr. Koepplin built the church at Sulphur Springs, is very much attached to it and the people, but his friends in the south have been lovely to him, he likes the climate and the chance for larger pecuniary returns could not move him from a community that he loves. His friends throughout this section will be glad he is to remain in the county.

  1. Pastor John C. Koepplin was my great grandfather. His only daughter, Martha Louise, was my grandmother. She was born in Sulphur Springs, Ohio, in 1899, which is where John's first church was established.

    1. I found a John C. Koepplin, who was married to Ida Alvina Labudde, who was born Jan. 22, 1871 in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio, and who died Aug. 3, 1922 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He was living at 1909 Windsor, Eaton County, Michigan when he died. HIs mother was Catherine Rahm and his father was John M. Koepplin. Ida's parents were born in Germany. She was born in Wisconsin.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has a Johannes C. Koepplin, same birth information, who was married May 8, 1894 in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin.
In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census John C. Koepplin, 49, and his wife, Ida, were living at 684 Chene Street in Detroit Ward 11, Michigan. His parents were both born in Pennsylvania and he was a clergyman at Solene Church. They'd been married for 15 years. Living with them were their children: Fredrick, 11; Martha, 10; Theodore, 8; Victor, 7; Walter, 5; and Clements, 3.
Ida was born in 1870. She was 59 when she died and living at 138 Otter Street, Detroit. Her children were listed as T.J., V.P., Clemens, Walter F. Koepplin, and A.C. Reppenhagen. Her siblings were Frank A. Labudde, Helen L. Schank, Fred W. Labudde and Clara E. Labudde. If you can get access to it, her obituary is in The Oshkosh Northwestern, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Monday, Jan. 13, 1930 issue on page 4.

    2. Thank you so very much! I will study your information, compare all the details with the material I have, & get back to you regarding everything. John & Ida were my great grandparents on my mother's side.
      I live in Michigan.
      Thank you, again!

  2. Hello Joan! Happy Thanksgiving!
My great grandma, IDA, died at 138 Otter St, but this was in Oshkosh,
WI, where she was visiting relatives. Her home at that time was in Detroit, MI.
Most of that info you were able to find, is accurate. Ida's children are listed twice in that article you sent, but only the 1st group (in the 1910 census), is accurate.
That 2nd group consista of just extended relatives.
I am not able to find Ida's or John's gravestones in Gethsemane Lutheran Cemetary in Detroit. I would love to learn their exact death dates! Are you able to find this info in any of your resources? Thank you so much!

  3. John, who may be listed as Johannes, died Aug. 3, 1922. Ida died January 13, 1930. I don’t know where they were buried. If you think it was Gethsemane Lutheran Cemetery in Detroit, contact the cemetery and say you want to visit their graves. They should be able to give you directions.
