T.D. Pickell Bears Many Scars, But He Survived Battle in Argonne Forest

From the Hickory Daily Record, June 4, 1919

Newton Man Bears Six Scars from Battle

Newton, June 4—Mr. T.D. Pickell, who was formerly with the Fidelity Hosiery Mill of this city, arrived in the city yesterday from Cleveland, Tenn., where he has been with his mother since his return to the states from overseas. Mr. Pickell wears six bad scars made by the Huns. His escape from death is nothing short of a miracle. He was wounded on the night of the 16th of October, he being in the Argonne Forest on that night. Sergeant Pickell had a detail of 16 men, two were killed and seven badly wounded by the same shell that wounded Mr. Pickell. Two pieces of shrapnel passed through his body. One piece weighs over an ounce. This piece was tied around his neck by the surgeon operating on him and this is how he came in possession of it. He was in base hospital 38 in France for 103 days and speaks in high praise of the treatment he received there by the surgeons and Red Cross nurses. At the time he was wounded he had a batch of letters on his person that night and these letters were saturated with blood. Sergeant Pickell’s name appeared in the casualty lists four different times in the Tennessee newspapers. His many friends in Newton are congratulating him upon his miraculous escape.
