The Franklin Times,
in speaking of the lynching of a negro near Louisburg last week, encouraged the
mob spirit when it said: “While there is general regret that the law was not allowed
to take its course, it is pretty generally agreed by both white and black that
Tyler got no more than what he deserved.” No matter if Tyler had committed the
foulest crime in history, he deserved the right of trial. Few lynchings ever
had for their victims a man who did not deserve to die, but a disregard of the
law means that the time will come when some innocent man will suffer.
