Graham Will Enforce Law Against Selling Cold Drinks, Tobacco Products on the Sabbath, Sept. 11, 1919

From the Alamance Gleaner, Graham, N.C., Sept. 11, 1919

Notice! Ordinance Against Selling Cold Drinks On Sabbath In Effect

The Board of Commissioners of the town of Graham, at their regular meeting, Monday, September 1st, adopted the following ordinance:

Be it ordained that no person, firm or corporation shall, on the Sabbath day, sell any cold drinks, cigars, cigarettes, tobaccos or the like merchandise, providing that this does not apply to drinks sold and actually served with meals; that any person violating the provisions hereof shall be fined $5 for each offense.

It has been reported to me during this week that there is a misunderstanding when this ordinance should go into effect, and as a result of this misunderstanding, I have been informed that ordinance was violated on the last Sabbath—hence this is to state the ordinance referred to above became a law in full force upon its adoption, September 1st, and I desire to state frankly, that this law WILL be enforced.

--Robt. L. Holmes, Mayor
