Carroll Eckard, Star Witness, Now In Jail As Accessory, Jan. 1, 1921

Carroll Eckard, star witness for Cecil Hefner in the Lippard murder trial, is reposing in Burke County jail today on a charge of being an accessory after the fact in the murder of Glenn Lippard on the night of November 20 and assisting Cecil and Dock in robbing the body after the homicide. The arrest was made by Chief Lentz at the request of Solicitor Huffman late yesterday afternoon following an investigation by Sergeant Sigmon of a report that Eckard had paid a Highland garage a sum of money after the murder with the remark, “Come easy, let her go easy.” Eckard was detained at police station yesterday about noon on another charge, that of immorality, but was released temporarily. Later Solicitor Huffman requested that he be held on an accessory in the Lippard murder. By his own admission, Eckard was with Cecil Hefner on the night of the tragedy from shortly after 8 o’clock until near 2:30 Sunday morning.
