B.W. Kilgore, Clarence Poe to Speak to Peanut Growers of Martin County, April 1921

Prominent Speakers at Farmers Meeting a

The meeting of the peanut growers of Martin County, to be held in Williamston Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the City Hall, is one of so much importance that no one interested in the better marketing of peanuts can afford to miss it. Those who come will have the good fortune of hearing the two real leaders of the farm forces of North Carolina—Dr. B.W. Kilgore, Director of Extension, and Dr. Clarence Poe, Editor of the Progressive Farmer. Theirs is a message of true progress.

A special feature of Thursday’s meeting will be the organization of the Martin County unit of the co-operative Peanut Exchange. The peanut growers of Virginia and North Carolina have now proceeded so far in organizing this exchange that the several counties are perfecting county organizations for the purpose of fully completing the organization of the Exchange and also for being in position to render it the greatest possible assistance when fully organized.

Only last week enthusiastic meetings of the peanut growers of Edgcombe and Halifax Counties were held and at each of these county units were formed. Several Virginia counties have already organized and within the next two weeks the work of organizing the counties will be fully completed. Other county meetings to be held in North Carolina this week will be at Windsor Friday morning and Winton that afternoon.

Next week Dr. Kilgore and Dr. Poe will address meetings in Gates, Perquimans and Chowan counties.

The work of securing signers to the growers’ contract in Martin county has moved steadily forward till now this county has a good number of growers who have signed the new Declaration of Independence and there is every reasonable assurance that Martin will give its full quota of signers.

The meeting Thursday is open to the public and a special invitation is extended to other growers and all business men to attend. While this meeting is being held especially for the furtherance of the peanut organization, the discussions of the great principle if cooperative marketing will prove of special interest to all growers and business men.
