Carthage, June 22—Jim Maples of Southern Pines is in Moore County jail in default of $5,000 bond, following his arrest on a warrant sworn out by his wife and her brother, charging that Maples held her and forced her to submit to an attack by a negro, Jake Smith.
Smith is at large.
Feeling is intense against both Maples and the negro and open threats were made against them this morning in the hearing before a magistrate.
