Jesse Rogers, a young negro of Williamston, has been traveling around to some of the neighboring towns recently drawing checks on different people. Thursday he forged a check on Bailey and Barnhill of Robersonville and took it to the store of Mr. Joe Lawrence Roberson to get it cashed. Mr. Roberson was a little suspicious on account of the amount of the check and asked the negro to wait until he went to the bank for more money. Instead he slipped across and asked Bailey and Barnhill about it and found it was a forgery. A policeman went back in the store with Mr. Roberson and proceeded to arrest Rogers, but the negro was a tall, strong fellow, and ran over not only the policeman and Mr. Roberson but a third man who was coming in the door. He made for the woods near the guano factory and was chased by various men and dogs for along distance before he was caught. He was taken by Mr. C. James to Sheriff Roberson’s apartment house where he will greet the Judge of the Superior Court in September. Rogers admits the forgery.
