Raleigh, July 11—Ku Klux Klan enemies have abandoned their campaign to hold up organization of the new edition of the “Invisible Empire” in North Carolina, so the announcement is made at the capital, the home of the state organizer.
The klansmen are banding themselves together in all sections of the state, virtually all of the larger cities and towns having from 500 to 3,0000 members when the last official tabulation was sent to Col. William J. Simmons, imperial wizard of the klan, of Atlanta. When these opposing the formation of such an organization in North Carolina gave up the fight no one seems to know. They have quit, however, and know there is nothing in the road to stop the klansmen from gaining in numbers.
Governor Morrison all but frustrated the anti-Ku Kluxers when it became known that he did not intend to interfere with the organization in this state several months ago. The word had been put out that the governor was opposed to the new organization and that h3 would seek to ban the organization from North Carolina. The governor denied this, his only criticism being that in his opinion the founder of the order should have selected a different name.
Having made acquaintance with the intent and purpose of the Ku Klux Klan Governor Morrison’s opposition faded away since he took the positin that nobody ought to oppose any organization that is seeking to aid the offiers of the law—this being the announced purpose of the new klan.
Tar Heels opposing the klan represented to the governor that the klansmen would cause trouble between the whites and the blacks but their prediction failed. Klan organizers declare that no trouble whatever is anticipated and that the negroes are not “alarmed” as had been reported.
