H.C. Lackey of Wilkesboro was preparing a temporary burying place for 10 gallons of mountain corn beneath the sod in a patch of woods near North Charlotte Saturday when two officers, in accordance with a pre-arranged plan, happened along.
Efforts were being made by friends at noon to arrange bond for Lackey and thereby obtain his release from the city jail. He will face trial on charges of transporting and having liquor for sale.
The local police have heard nothing of Lackey in the past and they were somewhat surprised that he should be caught engaged in the handling of liquor when his name had not been mentioned before in local police circles. This brought out the discovery that he did not live in Charlotte, but in a mountain city.
