Down Maxton Way

By James A. Cobb

As one of the readers of the Star of Zion I would like to speak a word to the readers of the paper. We at Red Bank School House have a good Sunday School and are doing good work for the upbuilding of humanity. We have been using the quarterlies ever since we organized and we must say we have learned more about the teaching of the Bible this quarter than ever before. We are out in the country away from any town or city, but we can say that we have some of the most highly esteemed young men and women the country can afford. I must say that the young men of this section are learning to be Sunday School teachers and doing work for the Master. Since April we have gained several young men from the gambling pin thicket and young women from working the roads. Our Sunday School teachers are Mr. M.M. Douglas, Mr. Ed. Taylor, sister Sallie Bethea, Sister Henrietta Mason, Secretary. Pray for us that much good may be done and that we may do more in the quarter to come than we did in the quarter past.

A word to inform the many readers that we are yet alive and want to move on.

I took my Sunday School up to New London on the 5th of June to help Rev. Cole in his Children’s Day exercise and found him at his post holding the fort. The Lord gave us a fine day and also a fine session. I had my choir with me and we had a full house and the Lord gave us a shower from on high.

Rev. Cole is at the right place. I think the Bishop made no mistake in sending him here. We raised $16.25 in that session, and we have closed with a gospel sermon, hoping to meet again.

Cedar Station is still alive but she feels the loss of four members from the church and also from the choir. Mrs. Jordan was the last of the four to depart from this life on the 27th of May. She left two children, a husband, and a host of friends. She was a musician and could sing almost as sweetly as an angel.

Rev. W.P. Perkins is going to try to stand at the top when the convention takes place. Watch his step. It is God’s hand that leads. If God be for you, who can be against you, for all things work together for good.

W.M. Lanier’s Sunday School has been in the fore-front for two years and has held the fort. Miss Jennie Colston, secretary for five years, is making her mark in life.
