Rutherfordton

Rutherfordton, Aug. 17—Messrs. Claude Keeter, Hicks Koone and Jim Earley, who were driving their car from Bat Cave to Hendersonville Saturday night, struck a buggy in which were riding a white man and two ladies. The hind legs of the horse were broken and it had to be killed. Keeter was driving. He was the only one of the party who was hurt very badly. His jawbone and shoulder were broken and skull fractured. The occupants of the buggy were not hurt. Early was lodged in Hendersonville jail. Keeter was rushed to the hospital at Hendersonville and was thought to be dying Sunday night but was better today. There is some chance for his recovery now, physicians think. Koone came home, changed his clothes, went to Hendersonville Monday and slipped the car out of the courthouse yard from the officers and made his escape with it.

The Wilson Construction Company finished their paving here last Friday noon. They have paved 2.2 miles, or 27,000 square yards in four months. The paving extends from the Seaboard depot on the east to the end of Washington street west. One mile of the paving was 16 feet wide while the road varied from 24 to 33 feet in width with a curb. The town is well pleased with the work and the rapidity with which it was done. Rutherfordton now has as much paving as any town in the State, to its population.

The contract for the last 6.5 miles of the highway to Chimney Rock will be let at Marion, August 23 at noon. The work will be of gravel surface and will make a good road. This will complete the improving of the highway through this county. This last contract extends from where the present contract work stops this side of the Logan house to the Henderson county line from Esmeralda Inn. It is expected that the entire road will be finished by January 1. This will fill a long felt need and will give this county a good road to Chimney Rock which can easily be transversed at any time of the year.

The rural letter carriers of the county met here Saturday afternoon and organized with Mr. G.W. Hodge of Route 4, president; T.L. Harrill, Bostic, Route 2, vice-president; and Mr. Grant Allen, Union Mills, Route 2, secretary. Much interest was manifested in the new organization.

Rev. W.M. Gold closed a great revival at Piedmont Baptist church, three miles of here. There were over 50 conversions and about 30 additions to the church.

The reunion at Piedmont High school, Lawndale, will be held September 3. A prominent alumnus will address the meeting. A business session will be held. Hundreds of present and former students, friends and neighbors of the school are expected to attend. A big picnic dinner will be served. The school has several thousand alumnae and alumni. The reunion is an annual affair.
