Doctors Identifying Diphtheria Carriers, Excluding Them From School, Sept. 7, 1921

Diphtherial Germs Found in Children

City Health Officer McPhaul, assisted by two private physicians, has completed a two-day eye, ear, nose and throat inspection of Charlotte school children. Eleven diphtheria carriers were found and other cultures are being made in the city laboratories in search of other carriers.

The purpose of the inspection was to list children found carrying diphtheria germs or with sore eyes or running ears. Diphtheria carriers will be excluded from school while they receive treatment from a physician. All students in grades one through seven were inspected. The physicians who volunteered their services for the inspection besides Dr. McPhaul were Drs. P.M. King, J.L. Ransom, E.C. Boyette, George Collins and R.M. Kimbrough.
