Old-Fashioned Horse Races at Fairgrounds, Sept. 9, 1921

Close Race Features of Wednesday’s Card

At the Fair Grounds Wednesday afternoon an old-fashioned race between local horses was held. Dr. W.E. Warren, John cook and sheriff Tucker of Greenville were the judges, and Dr. E.N. Gordon acted as starter. The first was a match race for a $300 purse and had the following entries. (Name of horse listed first, owner second, and driver last.)

Little Benjamin—I.W. Daniel—F. Dunstan

Golden Guy—Whit Purvis—Whit Purvis

Martin J.--B.R. Barnhill—B.R. Barnhill

Martin J., acting as the “dark horse” in the race, to the surprise of both his owner and his rivals, came out victorious in the end and now wears the County championship crown, which Little Benjamin had been holding for two years. It was not only a fight between the two horses but the skill of the drivers, Barnhill and Dunstan, was on trial as well.

The second race was for a $200 purse and carried the following entries:

King George—J.D. Barnhill—Barnhill

Chicamauga—Dr. Thigpen—Dr. Thigpen

Daniel’s Bob—I.W. Daniel—Whit Purvis

Teddy Bear—F. Dunstan—F. Dunstan

King George won by a small margin.

It is interesting to our people to learn that these horses are making a decent appearance in the races this year, and will add to the Fair races some local color.
