The total number of marriage licenses issued at the register of deeds’ office here for the past year was approximately 50 per cent less than during the preceding year, according to Register of Deeds Moore, which is explained largely by the fact that couples wishing to escape the inconvenience of obtaining a health certificate and spoiling the romance by legalities hie themselves over the South Carolina line and get married at York. Lancaster or some other county seat just over the South Carolina line.
There were 1,213 marriage licenses issued here in 1919; 1,179 in 1920; and 730 in 1921. Of the total number issued in 1921 the list of white couples was 471 and the number of negro couples was 259.
