Asheville, Jan. 21—Traffic on the Murphy division of the Southern Railway is practically suspended tonight because of earth slides resulting from heavy rains and flooding of streams the past two days. The town of Murphy is threatened with damage from the Hiwasee River, which has overrun its banks, carried away three bridges and destroyed roads over a wide area. There has been no rural delivery of mail for two days because of the impassable condition of the roads.
