The Independent has asked a number of representative citizens of Elizabeth City to tell the readers of this newspaper exactly how they feel about the new year, to indicate something of a program and suggest the possibilities for progress in 1922. A number of interesting articles appear in this issue of The Independent in response to the request. Only one man refused to contribute. Mayor W. Ben Goodwin, who, thru no fault of his own, is not in exact harmony with the Board of Aldermen over which he presides, did not feel that he should presume to speak for the city administration. I have therefore taken the liberty to run a blank column as a suggestion of about all that Mayor Goodwin could have promised for the Board had he written up a ream of paper. This explanation probably is due the Mayor who is in no way responsible for that blank column.
