David Pender's Bringing Store to Elizabeth City, Feb. 10, 1922

DAVID PENDER

Here then is David Pender, for your approval. He is that enterprising North Carolinian who went from Tarboro to Norfolk, Va., about 20 years ago with $5 in his pockets and from that capital built up one of the greatest grocery businesses in the United States. Not content with running the biggest department grocery in the South, D. Pender is establishing chain stores all over North Carolina and Virginia. He will open a store in Elizabeth City on February 11. His motto is “Work and smile,” and he does both exceedingly well. Photo by Mesny & Bishop
