Fireman Uses Pulmoter to Revive Willard Jenkins, Overcome by Gas, July 14, 1922

Overcome By Gas

Willard Jenkins, an employe of the Gas Company, was overcome by gas while making some adjustments to a gas pipe under a house on Cherry Street Wednesday noon. The prompt arrival of the fire department with a pulmoter speedily brought him around, so that he was soon able to get to work.

From the front page of The Elizabeth City Independent, July 14, 1922. The photograph shows a 1908 pulmoter and is from The Springfield Fire Journal and Ohio Fire History, online at http://springfieldfirejournal.blogspot.com/2007/04/pulmotor-squad.html. A pulmoter pumped oxygen or air or a combination of the two into and out of the lungs of a person who has stopped breathing because he had drowned, been breathing poisonous gases or been shocked by electricity.
