The Foreman-Blades Lumber Co. of Elizabeth City has an option on 18,000 acres of growing timber in Bertie County, the acquisition of which assures the operation of this large lumber manufacturing plant at Elizabeth City for a quarter century at least, taking in account the present large timber holding of this concern.
The 18,000 acres for which the Foreman-Blades Co., is now dealing is owned by the Greenleaf-Johnson Lumber Co. of Norfolk, who are no longer in the manufacturing business. The timber is about 75 or 80 miles from Elizabeth City by water, which is considered just a good run for a tug boat with tow barges. The bulk of the timber cut by the Foreman-Blades Lumber Co. is brought to the mill at Elizabeth City on tow barges.
The Foreman-Blades Lumber Co. manufactures 100,000 feet of lumber a day and is at the present time the largest employer of common labor in Elizabeth City. In fact, since the Dare Lumber Co. went out of business here several years ago, the wages of common labor in Elizabeth City are determined by the wage scale of the Foreman-Blades Lumber Co. the company has large timber holdings in several Northeastern North Carolina counties and has plans for the development of much of their timber lands when the timber is exhausted. Their pioneer development of cut-over lands is the Foreman Stock Farms Inc. of Elizabeth City, which is already a considerable development and aiding the movement for better livestock in Pasquotank.
