Our peaceful town was rudely awakened on Friday morning by the report that the Patch Department Store had been broken into during the night and some suits and hats and a few other articles stolen. The thieves had gained entrance to the store by breaking the large glass in the front door, and they evidently spent very little time in the building as there was no evidence of disturbance to the goods in the store. The robbery was first discovered by John Crain and Fred McCracken, who noticed the glass broken in the store door and immediately notified Mr. Patch. The famous Raeford blood hounds were secured and put on the scent and very cleverly followed the scene to Jim-town to a house occupied by a colored couple who gave their names as George Armstrong and Emma Edwards. In the room were found two women’s suits that had been missing from the Patch Store for several weeks.
The couple were put under arrest and brought before Justice Shaw, who placed them under bonds to appear at the January term of court in Carthage. As they were unable to furnish bonds, they were taken to Carthage and place in the County Jail to await trial. None of the goods that were stolen last Friday have as yet been recovered.
