A considerable part of the business district of the village of Gatesville, Gates County, was destroyed by fire Monday morning, according to reports received by Robt. R. Taylor of this city, a former resident of Gatesville. The stores of Edgar Cross, W.J. Dean, W.R. Hayes and J.A. Brown and the sales stables of J.L. Hoffler were completely destroyed. The new bank was slightly damaged and the big stores of R.M. Riddick and Eason & Company were, for a time, threatened. The loss is estimated at $20,000 partly covered by insurance.
