Memorial Service for Departed Elks Lodge Members, Dec. 1, 1922

Elks Will Honor Departed Members. . . Memorial Services at Majestic Theatre Sunday Afternoon at 3:30 O’clock—Public Invited

Memorial services for departed members of the Elks lodge will be held by Asheville lodge No. 1401, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, at the Majestic theatre, Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. The public is cordially invited to attend the memorial services at the Majestic, and all members are requested to meet at the Elk’s home, 232 Haywood street, at 2 o’clock.

The following program has been announced for the service: Exercises, ritual by officers of lodge; prayer by chaplain Rev. J.S. Williams; song, male quartet, Messrs. Hill, Hall, Davis and McIntyre; exercises continued, ritual; roll call of departed brothers; song, “Here My Cry, O Lord,” Miss Blanche Loftain; eulogy, Rabbi Harvey E. Wessell.

C.L. Abernathy of New Bern is a member of the order and a high official. He is a prominent attorney of eastern North Carolina and has been in public life for a number of years. He will deliver the principal address.

Exercises continued, ritual; song, “God Shall Wipe Away All Tears, Harker, Alvah H. Lowe,; address, C.L. Abernathy, New Bern; song, “I Waited for the Lord,” St. Seans, Mrs. O.C. Hamilton; song, quartet; “auld Lang Syne,” members; benediction, Rev. Louis J. Bour; march, orchestra, with Miss Margaret Smathers at the piano.

The present lodge was re-organized in October 1920 and since this time there has been no deaths. Departed members of the former lodge are: J.D. Plummer, W.R. Crawford, L.P. McCloud, A.P. Boyd, J.H. Drake, E.R. Hampton, W.B. Butler, Kope Elias, J.W. Pool, F.T. Meriwether, M. Lunz, A.G. Sheppard, W.I. Boyer, E.P. McKissick, R.L. Cooper, D.M. Luther, Fred Ward, A. Whitlock, John C. Smith, D.H. Rosenstein, F. Roger Grant, F.W. Johns and Dick Weaver.

Officers of the lodge are: E.P. Brownell Jr., exalted ruler; W.R. Geiger, esteemed leading knight; H.H. Harkins, esteemed loyal knight; N.P. Mulvaney, esteemed lecturing knight; W.O. Wolfe Jr., secretary; P.C. Blackman, treasurer; Frank H. Hill, esquire; J.E. Ockenfell, tiler; and B.B. Cohn, inner guard. Trustees John O’Neil, C.A. Walker and Dan Hill.

Memorial committee: W.O. Wolfe Jr., W.R. Geiger and P.C. Blackman.
