While hundreds of persons lost their homes in yesterday’s great fire, there were many who suffered losses ranging from $5,000 to $75,000 and possibly more. No information was available this morning on the amount of insurance which will be paid out by the insurance companies.
Among the heavy losers were the following:
R.W. Williamson, seven houses.
W.P. Metts, seven houses, which will be replaced immediately by homes of a better type.
D.F. Deppe, 11 houses.
Isaac Smith estate, approximately 100 houses.
J.M. Harrison, store in Frog Pond.
John Garrett, store on Burn Street.
E.H. Pittman, store on George Street.
Eli Franks, store at corner of George and Cypress.
Globe Theatre and adjoining store, belonging to J.S. Miller.
Aleck Davis, market on Queen Street.
Kennedy’s Pharmacy, New and Burn Streets.
Nassef Manufacturing Company, overall factory.
Dill Warehouse.
Farmers’ Warehouse.
Three colored churches: Ebeneezer, St. Peter’s, and Rue Chapel.
Royster Guano Company Warehouse.
Norfolk Southern paint sheds.
Newport Shipbuilding Company, Piers 1 and 2.
Norfolk Southern passenger coach sheds.
