Hamlet, Jan. 10—Mystery surrounds the death of Boyd P. Smith, formerly cashier of the Carolina State Bank at Gibson, and the shooting of his mother early yesterday morning. Mrs. Smith, who was shot twice, is critically ill, while her son died from the effect of a bullet wound.
It is generally believed here that the young man shot his mother and t hen committed suicide. No reasons could be discovered for the rash act.
The shooting occurred at the breakfast table. Because of the illness of Mrs. Smith, the coroner’s verdict has been delayed 10 days.
